Hearing Aid Fittings
Hearing is a complex and wondrous process. But once hearing loss occurs, it can take some time to regain the ability to hear lost sounds again. Unlike wearing glasses to help with poor eyesight, wearing hearing aids to help with hearing loss requires an acclimation phase to get used to your new instruments.
You will be fit with your new hearing aids on the very day you purchase them. During your fitting, your hearing aids will be programmed to meet your needs, and you’ll be given instructions on how to insert and remove them, as well as how to change the batteries and clean them. We’ll also review your expectations of your new device and go over how it will work in your day-to-day life. Sometimes the fitting process can be completed at the first visit. Other times it might require a few follow-up visits to ensure your hearing aids are working well.
You’re encouraged to begin wearing your new hearing aids as soon as you’ve purchased them. There is a chance things may sound a bit odd at first. It takes some time for your brain to relearn how to process various long-lost sounds. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to fully adjust to your new hearing aids, depending on how often you wear them at first. During this acclimation phase, we recommend taking a gradual approach and wearing your hearing aids for increasing periods of time each day. We also schedule regular follow-up appointments during your adjustment phase to check in on your progress. We’ll clean your hearing aids to keep them in good condition and make any adjustments needed to help you hear clearly. In between these appointments, we’re just a phone call away and encourage our patients to contact us with any questions or concerns they may have.
Take the slow and steady approach to adjusting to your new hearing aids. If you encounter situations where you still aren’t hearing well, write down what happened and let us know so we can reprogram your device. Most importantly, be patient. The time it takes to get your device dialed in and working perfectly for you is worth the few visits it might require.
Maintenance And Care
Like many other devices we use on a daily basis, our hearing aids need regular attention to keep them working well into the future. During your fitting or follow-up appointment, our team will review the maintenance and care procedures that we have found to be the most beneficial. Home cleaning, how to change out your hearing aid batteries, and tips for daily use will all be discussed.
From time to time you may consider bringing your hearing devices into our office for a full cleaning and adjustment. Think of it almost like vehicle maintenance, where you might get a car wash and vacuum out the inside on your own, but would probably rely on a professional for more detailed care. At Hearing Solutions that’s exactly how we can help, with diagnostic services and adjustments that will make your hearing aids good as new again, no matter what life throws at them.
